IESNA History and Description
The Illuminating Engineering Society of North America was founded in 1906 to establish scientific lighting recommendations and to advance knowledge of the lighted environment for the benefit and improvement of society. For a century, it has disseminated information about all aspects of good lighting practice to individual members and lighting industry professionals through a variety of programs, publications, and services. It has served as a forum for the exchange of ideas and information and as a vehicle for its members' professional development and recognition. Through its technical committees with hundreds of qualified members from the lighting community, the IESNA correlates vast amounts of research, investigations, and discussions to guide lighting experts and the general population on research and consensus-based lighting recommendations. The strength of the IESNA is its diversified membership: Engineers, Architects, Designers, Educators, Students, Contractors, Distributors, Utility Personnel, Manufacturers, and Scientists.
BC Section History

The official beginnings of IES in British Columbia are obscured in history. The one sure fact is that Eric Ackland was officially appointed Local Representative in Vancouver for the year 1939-40.
Eric served as Local Representative until 1944 when he made a second attempt to form a Chapter. The Chapter was formed September 13, 1945. Total membership at that time was about 23.
In 1946 it became obvious that our association was more with the Sections and Chapters in the States of Washington and Oregon than with the other Canadian Sections and Chapters, the closest of which were in Ontario. Following considerable verbiage, and several heart-rending speeches we voted to request IES headquarters to change our affiliation from the Canadian Region to the Pacific Northwest Region. Approval was granted for this change on February 12, 1947.
In 1948 we had sufficient members to meet the requirements for a Section, and our application was approved February 9, 1949.
